As a senior medical student at Queen's University, we have the option of doing our Family Medicine core rotation through ERMEP. This is a reasonable route to take considering that ERMEP pays for the lodging, which makes it easier for students to experience medicine at a more rural community center. For my particular 6 week rotation, they offered me the option of Pembroke, which I eagerly accepted...I had heard mediocre feedback about Family Medicine rotations in larger cities, and was quite excited to work in a smaller community." I was very fortunate to have been assigned to Dr. Gibson, who turned out to be one of the best preceptors I've ever had the opportunity to work with. He is a GP in every sense of the word, with a busy daily schedule that included hospital in-patient care, his own family practice, ER shifts, and OR assists. As a result, I had a wide exposure to different aspects of medicine, from the office to the operating room. All the staff at the Pembroke Regional Hospital were extremely friendly and welcoming to new students. Many were willing to take extra time and effort out of their work to provide learning opportunities for me (in particular Drs. Plante, Dr. Cantin, Dr. Ferri, Dr. Rashid, and Dr. Onochie). Even as a student, I felt very welcomed and at home, which facilitated better learning overall. In terms of the more practical aspects of doing an out-of-town rotation in Pembroke, everything was set up smoothly for my stay. I was lodged in a house directly across the street from the hospital, making early morning in-patient rounds very convenient. There are 3 bedrooms in the house, and is shared by rotating students/residents from other cities as well; and from my personal experience, everyone there was very friendly and respectfully. The internet access, weekly cleaners, etc., were all also very much appreciated. Looking back over my rotation, I do not think I could've had a better Family Medicine experience anywhere else, especially in the bigger centers. I definitely recommend Pembroke for any student/resident looking for a more hands-on experience at a location that provides a wide variety of opportunities in different areas of medicine.” Edmund Kwok |
