Intensive Care Unit

The decision to admit or transfer a patient to the Critical Care Unit is generally made by medical staff in consultation with nursing staff to permit closer observation.

In this unit, the room is shared with someone of either gender.

The nursing staff aim to provide patients with the highest quality of care which is centered around all needs: physical, psychological, social and spiritual. Patient and/or family participation is strongly encouraged in decision-making regarding treatment and all aspects of health care.

To ensure optimum care for all patients in the unit, we require patient/family cooperation.

Visitations are restricted to the Hospital's Visiting Hours.   Visitors are are asked to check with the nurse on arrival and limit stay to 30-minutes. A lounge area is available nearby for immediate family for periods between visits. If special considerations are necessary, please inform the nurse on duty.

  • Rest periods for patients are between 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.
  • Fresh flowers and plants are not permitted.
  • We ask that patient’s clothing be taken home as space is limited. Hospital gowns and pyjamas are provided during unit stay.
  • It would be greatly appreciated if calls could be limited and only one caller be designated to inform others.  As a contact person, please let the nurse know where you can be reached at all times.  Staff will make every effort to ensure you are informed.
  • Information on patient’s health status can be obtained by calling this number: 732-3675, local 6060 at any time day or night.
  • We, as caregivers, recognize the importance of emotional and family bonds and subsequent concern and interest.
  • If at any time assistance is needed, please ask. Nursing staff is committed to professional and technical excellence.
