By John Epps, MD

Pembroke is an attractive small city located in the centre of a wonderful outdoor playground. It has a complete range of retail shops and services. The pace of life is relaxed and you can find plenty to do. There are theatre and musical societies, as well as clubs for yachting, hunting and fishing. Algonquin Park's east side can be entered in 30 minutes and there is white water rafting for the more adventurous at Westmeath. Ottawa is only a short drive away and offers world class entertainment and sporting events.

For the healthcare professional, Pembroke offers a challenging, yet supportive milieu in which to practice. The Pembroke Regional Hospital has already crossed the hurdles of restructuring and downsizing and looks forward to the future. Our $36 million capital project is underway and will house ICU, ER, Rehabilitation Medicine, Mental Health, and Diagnostic Imaging. Far more important than the facility is the impressive list of medical professionals we have managed to attract. In the last two years, our medical staff has welcomed the following specialists: two general surgeons, a psychiatrist, a physiatrist, a radiologist, and an anesthesiologist. This means we can offer a wide range of services to the people of Renfrew County including general surgery, urology, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, obstetrics/gynecology, dental surgery, anesthesiology, psychiatry, internal medicine, rehabilitation medicine, and radiology.
