Telehealth

The focus of the Eastern Ontario Telehealth Network project is to provide a full range of clinical consultation services along the continuum of care from paediatric to cardiac acute care, to complex continuing care, and palliative care to 20 hospitals in Eastern Ontario through the application of telecommunications technology.

The Pembroke Regional Hospital was chosen as the community lead hospital in the initiative for the Eastern Ontario Telehealth Network.

At present, one of the unique items of technology in use as part of the Telehealth platform is an integrated electronic stethoscope between the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and the Pembroke Regional Hospital.  The electronic stethoscope permits a "real-time" (immediate) transmission of heart sounds and cardiac ultrasounds facilitating quick responses in cardiac situations when time is of the essence.

The Pembroke Regional hospital and the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) are partnered to provide paediatric clinical services to CHEO's patients and families residing in the Pembroke area.

While the primary focus of the Eastern Ontario Telehealth Network project is providing specialty consultations to rural and community hospitals, the hospitals are also able to maximize on the potential of the Telehealth equipment  for other essential purposes such as:

  • Continuing Education programs for Patients and Families

  • Continuing Education for Medical, Nursing and Allied Health Personnel

  • Clinical Rounds and peer-to-peer consultations

  • Research opportunities

Rehabilitation Services is joining with other hospitals such as Kirkland Lake, Englehart, Hawkesbury, etc., in linking with the Ottawa Rehabilitation Centre (Terry Fox Mobile Clinic) using telehealth technology through the web site for consultation, follow up and educational purposes. Using this interactive service, therapy staff can access and explore new procedures, equipment or treatment modalities to serve the client better, or participate in research projects with all other hospitals involved.
